What Are the Classes?
AHVED's ESL program offers free, practical English instruction designed specifically for Haitian adults and immigrants who need to communicate effectively in their daily lives — at work, at the doctor's office, at school meetings, and in their communities.
Classes are offered at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, so students can start where they are and grow at their own pace. Instruction focuses on the English you actually need — not textbook exercises, but real conversations and real situations.
Classes are available at all levels — no prior English required.
Whether you are just starting out or want to strengthen your existing English for professional or daily use, there is a class for you. Instruction is provided by trained educators who understand the Haitian community's needs and culture.
What You Will Learn
Topics rotate and expand based on student needs and class level. Core areas include:
Workplace English
Job application vocabulary, workplace communication, understanding instructions, and talking with supervisors and coworkers.
Daily Conversation
Practical phrases for everyday life — shopping, transportation, appointments, school communication, and community interactions.
Reading & Writing
Foundational literacy skills: reading signs, forms, letters, and basic documents. Writing sentences, filling out forms, and everyday written communication.
Medical Vocabulary
Understanding medical terms, communicating symptoms, following doctor instructions, and navigating healthcare appointments in English.
Financial English
Banking vocabulary, understanding bills and contracts, reading financial documents, and communicating with banks and employers about pay.
Civic & Community English
Understanding rights, communicating with schools, navigating government offices, and participating in community meetings.
